So yesterday, I decided to be a typical Singaporean and join in the Michelin-starred queue.
I went around 5pm and was secretly thankfully for just an hr's wait (my friends each queued for 3 and 1.5 hours respectively during the 1st week of its opening). To be honest, the food was good but not to the extent where it's worth the queue. If you are dying to try THW, I suggest you head there on a weekday instead cause even on weekdays, the minimum wait is at least 90 minutes as depicted on the signages along the queue.
A snapshot of the queue right from the entrance to where I was.
(Not including the few who were queuing before the entrance)
One of the reason why I came to Tim Ho Wan was to try the raved Steam Egg Cake.......
IMAGINE MY UTTER DESPAIR WHEN I SAW THIS NOTICE AT THE ENTRANCE.
Shoooooooot me purleaseeee. I took a snapshot and had it sent to Jeh with all the sad emoticons I could possibly find on the keypad. :'(
Business was so good they had to stop people like you and me from over-ordering their charsiewbuns. #kwazhangplease
While I was salivating while queuing, I did notice most customers ordering a plate of 3 char siew buns each. I thought it was a little unbelievable.... i mean they cannot share meh? So nice meh? why order a plate each? So qiang meh?
Then after giving those legendary buns a try, I figured it kinda make so much more sense to order a plate each cause char siew bun lovers would finish them within seconds, and even if they couldn't they could always do takeaways... afterall they must maximize their privilege and make their efforts t queue worthwhile, right?
Remember the sold out steamed egg cake? Jeh decided to be mischievous and ordered one of it. To my surprise, her mischievous act earned me a try of the raved egg cake. I was so happy I can't stop grinning at the dinner table, it suddenly felt as though I was a champion, lol.
SO HOW WAS IT?!
Tasteless. So super disappointed.
Did I regret ordering it?
YESSSSSSS. LOL. I gave my Sis that disappointed and disgusted face. Most of the food reviews I've read on this was super favourable!!! Waiiiii must they deceive people like you and me? Anyway, please do yourself a favour.... learn from my lesson and don't order it. You'll come to thank me for my honesty. I don't even think it should be on the list of its 4 heavenly kings.
First dish that came was Pork Dumpling with Shrimps/Siew Mai (S$5.00)
This dish was delectable and fresh! Skin was consistently thin, meat and shrimp were generous too.
Jeh & me love these a lot ^^
I wuvvvv their chilli too *love-strucked*
Hmmm, yeah. then came the Steamed Egg Cake (S$3.80), really... not impressive at all.
Not even worth a try.
Prawn Dumplings ($5.50), being a prawn lover, I must say this was my favourite dish.
Love the crunchy prawns and thin dumpling skins.
Really delish ^^
Heavenly King #4: Pan-fried carrot cake ($4.50)
Never been a fan of dimsum's carrot cake, including this.
A tad too oily and there's also a weird taste that every carrot cake has that I didn't like.
Sis didn't like this too :/
Spring Roll with Egg White ($4.20)
We thought their rendition of springrolls were a dish of great novelty! Jeh & I are egg white fanatics (~^.^~) Perhaps, that kinda explains it? This dish should totally replace the former carrot cake and join the clan of 4 must-tried dishes. My 2nd favourite item, really crispy!
Okay, lao da is here. The legendary Baked Bun with BBQ Pork (S$4.50)
We decided to order 2 plates and had the rest takeaway for Mommykins, Daddykins and Mama to try.
The sauce was unique, bun was akin to polo buns but meat was a lil too fat. Nonetheless, still a plate of good charsiewbun!
This pic reminds me of Ren Rou Char Shao Bao. lol
Maybe that's why I nv like charsiewbunz.
#omnomnom
Total bill amount to approximately $39? Not very filling also leh....
Anw, courtesy of Daniel, I won a gift card to bring Jeh for some yummy desserts.
The other time I went to Bing Bian was with Fattie where she had Calamansi shaved ice and me, peanut shaved ice. Mine tasted really quirky.. too quirky for my liking but fattie's calamansi was all good and refreshing! So having learnt that i should avoid the YuYuan series, I've ordered a mango shaved ice this time round ;) Jeh ordered lychee shaved ice. I'm sure the fruit series are the safest and yummiest!
Mine was yummyyyyyy with mango meats, mango pops (i love these! had a great time popping them in my mouth hehe) and almond flakes. My new found love! ^^
Jeh's one contained lychee, lychee pops and almond flakes ^^
We each had a complimentary drink which I've requested for a takeaway cause we've decided to give these 2 drinks away to someone who needs it more than us :)
and when we walked out, we found our target at the bus stop :)
Initially, we wanted to wake this uncle up but fear he might just get cranky and flare up.
We definitely wouldn't want to be in public's attention, hence decided to just leave the drinks right beside him. I really hope he would notice the drinks placed beside him and not leave without them. Jeh & I hope this would brighten up your day even though it's something really small.
